The Ford 6.2 V8, nicknamed the Boss, was a heavy duty power plant for Ford trucks and vans from 2010–2022. Ford put the 6.2 Boss inside their top of the line first generation F-150 SVT Raptor from 2010–2014, as well as in the F-250/350 Super Dutys from 2011–2022, and 2017–2019 E-series vans. Depending on the model, the Boss V8 pumped out 385-411 horsepower and 405-434 lb-ft of torque. However, for those looking to get even more performance out of their truck/van, Ford 6.2 tuner upgrades are the best bang for your buck.
You can easily add almost 10% more horsepower and torque with just tuning alone and no bolt-on modifications. Installation is painfully easy, and you’ll have your truck feeling completely different in just a few minutes. Read on to find the best 6.2 Ford tuners for the SVT Raptor and Super Duty. Make sure to check out our other Ford 6.2 Boss content, including our ultimate 6.2 Boss engine guide, top 6.2 Boss performance upgrades, most common 6.2 Boss problems guide, and our 6.2 Boss supercharger upgrade guide.
6.2 Ford Raptor Tuner Basics
Though it is no longer in production, Ford produced the 6.2 Boss from 2010–2022. It is a 6.2 liter V8 engine that is naturally aspirated from the factory. The valve train uses a simple single overhead camshaft (SOHC) design with 16-valves total. Depending on the model and year, the Boss V8 pumps out 385-411 horsepower and 405-434 lb-ft of torque.
The Ford 6.2 V8 responds very well to tuning, and tuning is a relatively simple way to add lots of horsepower. For the Boss 6.2, the only type of aftermarket tuning available is known as flash tuning. Flash tuning is easy and involves the customer using a handheld tuning device to install new software onto their vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU). The ECU controls pretty much every aspect of how the engine runs. The factory calibration is geared towards emissions and fuel economy for legal reasons, and sometimes that hurts performance.
Aftermarket Ford 6.2 tuner upgrades override the factory calibrations, and introduce new programming that optimizes the engine for the best performance. This includes enhancing things like the air-to-fuel ratios, ignition and camshaft timing, torque converter strategies, shift strategies, and shift pressures/slip timers. All of these combine to make the truck not just more powerful, but also much more drivable. In addition, tunes can also be optimized for fuel economy, allowing for better savings at the pump without losing performance.
Ford Tuning Terminology
One thing we should probably clarify before going any further is tuning terminology. The terms “tune,” “tuning,” “tuning,” and “tuned” are sometimes used interchangeably with each other but they describe slightly different things. Additionally, E-tuning is a blanket term that is also widely used.
- Tune/Map – The file or software that is flashed to your ECU or manipulates it signals
- Tuner – Tuner can refer to either these two things:
- 1) The person/company setting the engine parameters in the tune file
- 2) The handheld device used to flash or piggyback your ECU
- Tuning – The process of adjusting the engine’s parameters
- Tuned – A car that has been modified through either a flash or piggyback tuner
- E-Tuning – The process of having one’s car tuned by a tuner through email correspondence
It’s easy to mix these up when you first start learning about the process, so don’t be discouraged. If you ever have a question as to what something means you can always double check here.
Ford Raptor Tuning Benefits
Some of the benefits of a 6.2 Ford tuner include:
- Gains of nearly 10% horsepower and torque
- Increased fuel economy
- Increased power band
- Increased towing capacity
- Maximize gains from other mods
- Datalogging and DTC troubleshooting
More Performance and Towing
There are a ton of benefits to tuning your Ford 6.2 Boss-powered SVT Raptor or Super Duty. The most obvious are the improvements to performance. Not only will you see better peak horsepower and torque numbers, but the entire power band will be much smoother and more usable. The 6.2 Boss is notorious for lacking in low-end response, and tuning takes care of that immediately.
In addition, you can also get tunes that specifically focus on having better fuel economy, and those that are designed to work with different octane levels. Also available are tunes that prioritize towing capacity, allowing your engine to more efficiently haul and tow. This is great for those using their truck daily for hauling, as it will really benefit you in your day-to-day driving.
Tuning is great not just for stock vehicles, but also those that have been modified. Some of the most popular 6.2 Boss performance upgrades are headers, camshaft upgrades, and intakes. With tuning, you can maximize the gains from all of your different mods, and make sure they are running safely and within spec.
Finally, tuners are great for their datalogging and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) troubleshooting capabilities. Most handheld tuners, like the SCT which is extremely popular for the Boss, also have the ability to datalog and read DTCs on the fly. This means you can check in to make sure your engine is running as it’s supposed to, i.e. hitting target boost (if supercharged), having the proper air-to-fuel ratios, and not detonating. You can also read and clear diagnostic trouble codes DTCs with your tuner, which saves you from buying a separate and expensive scan tool.
6.2 Ford Tuner Risks
Now that we’ve gone over the benefits, let’s also talk about the risks of Ford 6.2 tuner upgrades. One of the most important is your warranty. Most dealerships can tell if you have had your ECU flashed. Which means they can potentially deny power train claims resulting from a blown engine. That’s why you want to make sure you are only using reputable tuners who have experience with the Boss platform.
Besides warranty claims, the next biggest issue is how much power the Raptor can handle. WIth just tuning and some basic bolt-ons, the Boss V8 will be well within its capability limits. It’s not really until you start adding forced induction that you need to worry about upgrading the internals to forged versions and adding head studs.

The best Ford 6.2 tuners are:
- Livernois Motorsports
- 5 Star Tuning
- JDM Engineering
- Unleashed Tuning
1) Livernois Motorsports 6.2 Ford Tuner for Raptor and Super Duty
The top option for Ford 6.2 tuner upgrades is Livernois Motorsports Ford 6.2 Raptor and Super Duty tuning. Livernois Motorsports is based out of Dearborn, Michigan, and they have a wealth of experience with Ford platforms. They offer tuning for all years of the 6.2 SVT Raptor and Super Duty trucks. Livernois claims gains of up to 26 horsepower and 27 lb-ft of torque, which is not bad for just tuning alone. In addition, Livernois’ tunes also maintain flex-fuel compatibility for factory equipped Super Duty trucks, and can store multiple tunes.
They offer two tunes with their package, a specific towing tune and a specific performance tune. Livernois includes their proprietary MyCalibrator tuning device, which allows you to seamlessly switch between the two tunes for whatever the occasion calls for. They also modify the shift logic and shift points, which is extremely beneficial when hauling in 4th gear or higher where the factory logic struggles.
Livernois offers custom tuning, which means they will tailor your tune to fit your specific vehicle, environmental conditions, fuel quality, and other mods. The Livernois Motorsports Raptor and Super Duty tunes are highly recommended, and they deliver outstanding performance and value.
2) 5 Star Tuning 6.2 Ford Tuner for Raptor and Super Duty
Next up we have 5 Star Tuning (5 Star Tuning Gen 1 Raptor, 5 Star Tuning 2011–2016 Super Duty, 5 Star Tuning 2017–2022 Super Duty) for the Raptor and Super Duty. Five Star is one of the most well known names in the Boss 6.2 tuner community, and they have a wide range of tunes similar to Livernois. They have many different calibrations available for economy, daily towing, or performance tuning. You can also pick out different octane levels, ranging from a low of 85 for mountain customers to a high of 93.

3) JDM Engineering 6.2 Ford Raptor Tuning
Our third recommendation is JDM Engineering Raptor tuning. JDM Engineering only works with the SVT Raptor platform with the Ford 6.2, and does not offer Supty Duty tuning. Still, for the Raptor, the JDM tunes are second to none. They offer custom tuning like Livernois and 5 Star, which will tailor the engine mapping to your specific vehicle and environmental conditions. JDM is very well known in the SVT Raptor tuning community, and they have a great presence.
For a tuning device, JDM uses the SCT X4 handheld device. They are a bit more on the pricey end, but they deliver a fantastic product. Updates for tuning if you decide to make other changes down the road, like wanting a new fuel octane map or adding mods, are $150 from JDM Engineering, which is not terrible. You won’t be disappointed in a JDM Engineering tune for your Gen 1 SVT Raptor.
4) Unleashed Tuning 6.2 Ford Raptor Tuning
Our final recommendation is Unleashed Tuning for the Raptor. Like JDM Engineering, Unleashed Tuning works exclusively with the SVT Raptor for the Ford 6.2. They offer custom tuning for the Raptor, which they optimize for your specific vehicle and conditions. Unleashed might not be as well known as some of our other choices, but they have a solid reputation for delivering outstanding tunes and having great customer service.
Unleashed uses SCT devices, the Livewire or X4, for their handheld tuning device. They charge $250 for the first tune, and another $50 for any supplemental maps. A benefit of Unleashed Tuning is that they work to make their tunes emissions compliant, so if you live in an area with stricter emissions it might be one of your better SVT Raptor tuning options.
